Zimbabwe is a spellbinding destination for travellers drawn to wild places, adventure and iconic African wildlife. From the thunderous curtain of Victoria Falls – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – to vast savannahs and national parks.
Hwange National Park, the country’s largest reserve, is famed for its immense elephant herds and numerous lions. While leopard and rhino are more elusive here than in South Africa’s Kruger, Hwange rewards travellers with rarities such as sable and roan antelope.
Further north, Mana Pools National Park offers walking and canoeing safaris (along with traditional game drives) on the Zambezi River. Here you’ll find elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra, lions, hyena and endangered wild dogs, set against beautiful riverine forests and wide floodplains.
For a journey steeped in romance and nostalgia, you can also explore Zimbabwe aboard the luxurious Rovos Rail, travelling through Hwange and Matobo to the dramatic Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe pairs beautifully with Botswana’s Chobe and Okavango Delta or Namibia’s Caprivi, creating a seamless, multi-country safari rich in wildlife and wonder.
FAQ's
Is it better to see Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwean or Zambian side?
The most iconic photographic views of the main falls and Devil’s Cataract are found in Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side. However, Zambia also offers compelling perspectives. Knife’s Edge Bridge brings you thrillingly close to the Eastern Cataract, while the adventurous can swim in Devil’s Pool (a natural rock pool right on the edge of the falls), accessed from Zambia during the low-water season.
Besides Victoria Falls, what else can I see in Zimbabwe?
There are numerous national parks where you can view wildlife, namely Mana Pools, Hwange, Gonarezhou and Zambezi National Parks. Lake Kariba is popular for houseboat stays and fishing for tiger fish.
