For first-time safari goers, we often recommend South Africa’s nearby Kruger National Park, which has fairly predictable Big Five sightings. However, for more seasoned safari travellers, it’s worth considering Gorongosa National Park in central Mozambique.
This underrated destination is three-and-a-half times the size of the Maasai Mara, yet it currently accommodates only 32 overnight visitors, which adds a rare level of exclusivity. This park has an inspiring rewilding story and is an especially good place to see wild dogs. You’ll also have the rare chance to encounter pangolins through their pioneering rehabilitation and release programme.
After time in the bush, many travellers continue their journey to the idyllic beaches of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
FAQ's
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?
Recognised as one of the most biodiverse parks on Earth, Gorongosa’s floodplains, forests and savannahs support a wide range of wildlife. You could encounter wild dogs, rare pangolins, large herds of antelope and waterbuck, elephants, lions and crocodiles along the park’s rivers. Birdlife is exceptional, with almost 340 species recorded in the park.
When is the best time to visit Gorongosa?
Gorongosa has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The cool dry season from May to October is generally the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense. During the wet season, Muzimu and Chicari camps close from 30 November to 1 April, and Expedition Camp closes from 16 December to 31 May and from 1 to 30 August.
Can Gorongosa be combined with Mozambique’s beaches?
Yes. Many travellers combine a safari in Gorongosa National Park with time on the Indian Ocean, particularly the white-sand islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, known for its turquoise waters, marine life and relaxed island lodges.
