Kenya is the heart of the classic East African safari and is famous for documentary-like scenes of great herds of wildebeest stampeding across plains and crossing rivers, avoiding the enormous crocodiles that lie in wait.
Vast herds of wildebeest migrate year-round in search of grazing, moving between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. From July to October, you may witness river crossings along the Mara, while the green season reveals lush landscapes, newborn animals, and fewer game-drive vehicles.
In Amboseli National Park, elephants wander across open plains framed by the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro (situated across the border, in Tanzania). In Kenya, you can also explore conservation-led areas like Ol Pejeta, a haven for rhino and rescued chimpanzees.
To experience Kenya, beyond the hype of the great migration, we recommend staying in private conservancies, where wildlife encounters are quieter, walking safaris are possible, and tourism directly supports conservation and local Maasai communities.
Kenya is a great destination for a family safari. The Maasai people adore children and the experience your children will have in Kenya will leave them with a lifelong connection to the land and its people.

FAQ's
Is it only worthwhile visiting Kenya during the great wildebeest migration?
No. Kenya is a rewarding year-round safari destination. While the migration is a seasonal highlight in the Maasai Mara, regions such as Laikipia, Samburu, and Lewa offer excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year, including predators and rare species like Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. Rhino sightings are most reliable in protected conservancies such as Lewa.
What are the highlights of a trip to Kenya?
An exciting safari, hot air balloon trips over the Masai Mara and cultural interactions with the Maasai people are certainly highlights; however, Kenya isn’t just savannah. Mount Kenya is snow-capped and there are palm-fringed beaches along the Indian Ocean. You can easily combine safari with cultural experiences or a beach escape in Diani or Lamu.
