Before starting this newsletter, I want to say, I am *very* excited about the November newsletter! I visited eleven luxury safari lodges in Kruger and Greater Kruger during October and have a full review and video to share with you next month, so keep an eye on your inbox. This month, I have a short guide to South Africa for all of you – it is linked below.
This issue of the newsletter is about food and wine, two of my favourite things. When it comes to enjoying food and wine, I think we should follow Francis Ford Coppola when he says “I used to make to-do lists. I don’t do that anymore – now I write a to-enjoy list.”
South Africa is not yet known internationally for its food, but it should be. We grow most of our own food right here and the beef and lamb we produce is some of the best in the world. The food I miss most when away from South Africa is our fruit – those delicious bananas, nectarines, mangos, plums and apples.
There are many ways to discover South Africa’s food and wine. Starting with simply eating at our many excellent restaurants, or by visiting our wine regions, or by doing a foodie walking tour of Cape Town. The foodie tour of Cape Town is often the highlight of our clients holiday, thanks to the huge passion our guide has for food and her city! We also have a superlative guide for the wine region if you would prefer to explore the vineyards accompanied by a local expert.
Here is my list of personal favourites, which is of course subject to change at any time!
Favourite wine: Creation wines
Favourite vineyard: Delaire Graff Estate
Favourite restaurant in Cape Town: The Stack
Favourite restaurants in Johannesburg: Thief, PRON
Favourite traditional food: Bobotie
Favourite food experience: our Cape Town walking tour or an all day lunch at Die Strandloper
Place I always recommend to family and friends: Lunch at La Petite Ferme in Franschhoek
Let me know which your favourite places are, I love hearing from readers! And get in touch if you would like our expert team to tailor make your next foodie adventure to South Africa.

We are totally independent and not affiliated to any group of lodges, so you know that you’re getting the best itinerary and choice of accommodation on offer.
Crafting your ideal holiday can be a time consuming exercise, especially if you don’t know the region well, or you’re travelling in a group (like a multi-generation family holiday, or for a special celebration). We take your requirements and then distill and simplify all the travel info into a perfect itinerary for you. You’re welcome to be involved in the planning process as much, or as little, as you like.
Leopard is a small “human-sized” business offering personal touches. We want you to feel like you’re dealing with a real person who gives you the attention you deserve.
We specialise in curating itineraries that apply sustainable travel principles. One of our core company values is to support the conservation of biodiversity through travel. We recommend longer stays in each destination, supporting local small businesses and visiting off the beaten track attractions.
Our meticulous planning ensures our clients have a completely seamless experience, but in those instances where something goes wrong, we are available 24/7 to solve any problems.
We are true Africa experts. “My team and I visit almost every hotel and update our ‘little black books’ with hidden gems, so I can recommend the perfect stay for every client,” says Diana Granoux, Leopard’s founder and director.
We curate each journey for you. Every itinerary is handcrafted to ensure that it matches perfectly with your wishes. We tailor each itinerary so every detail feels perfect. From breathtaking beaches to adventurous safaris, spectacular views, hotels and knowledgeable guides.
