Dive with whale sharks in the middle of the Atlantic, walk in the footsteps of emperors and explorers, and hike across volcanic ridge lines above the open ocean. Saint Helena is one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, and one of its most fascinating. It’s also home to the world's oldest living land animal, Jonathan the tortoise, who lives at Plantation House (which has hosted several British royals and other dignitaries).
The island’s cliffs rise dramatically from the sea, sheltering green valleys and a small capital, Jamestown, where Georgian buildings and historical fortifications line a narrow canyon. From here, the 699 steps of Jacob’s Ladder staircase climbs steeply up the hillside, offering a bird’s-eye view across town, harbour and out to sea.
St Helena has long captured the imagination of explorers and historians. It was here that Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final years in exile, and visitors can explore Longwood House, where the former emperor spent his last years and died in 1821. Naturalist Charles Darwin stopped here during his voyage on HMS Beagle, documenting the island’s unusual geology and endemic species.
Beyond its history, St Helena is a wonderful destination for nature lovers. The sub-tropical island’s ocean is known for its seasonal encounters with whale sharks, as well as dolphins, turtles and vibrant reef life. The ocean also provides great game-fishing opportunities. Divers can fin over lava formations and explore caves and historic shipwrecks in exceptionally clear Atlantic waters.
FAQ's
Can I use my phone on the island?
St. Helena is a "digital detox" destination by nature, though things are slowly changing. You can use your phone by buying a local sim card. WiFi is limited, but it is available at the airport and the Mantis Hotel.
International roaming is rare and expensive. Your best bet is to buy a local SIM in Jamestown.
Can I use my credit cards on the island?
There are no ATMs on the island. While some hotels accept cards, many local shops and taxis are cash only. You can use British Pounds (GBP) or St. Helena Pounds (SHP), which are 1:1. The Bank of St Helena accepts South African Rand (ZAR), Euro and US Dollar (USD).
