This month, we escaped the South African winter to spend a few glorious weeks in the south of France. The heat was intense and the&nbsp;<em>cigales<\/em>&nbsp;(cicadas) deafening, just as it should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the perfect summer holiday with not much to do except rise late to eat light breakfast of espresso and pain au chocolat (which we do&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;call&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europe1.fr\/insolite\/pain-au-chocolat-ou-chocolatine-les-francais-mettent-fin-au-debat-3870047\">chocolatine<\/a>&nbsp;in this part of France!), eat lunch&nbsp;<em>en famille<\/em>&nbsp;before taking a nap in the heat of the day. In the cool evenings, we watched some theatre at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/festival-avignon.com\/fr\/\">Avignon Theatre festival<\/a>, or enjoyed the fresh air with friends at a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the other great pleasures of taking a summer holiday during winter months is the opportunity to catch up on some reading. For this issue of the newsletter I have collected a few of my favourite summer readings, a video, and a podcast for you to enjoy at your leisure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/leopard.voyage\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FR1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leopard.voyage\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FR1.png 700w, https:\/\/leopard.voyage\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FR1-300x114.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of Disney\u2019s much awaited Lion King movie, released earlier this month, might also like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/229011424\">this short film on the declining lion populations in Africa<\/a>, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had the great pleasure of watching the exciting Wimbledon men\u2019s final, you might enjoy reading&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7895fe14-9667-11e9-8cfb-30c211dcd229?fbclid=IwAR1r-eiXhhlLhabPVu8wHduducfux2VoQ39EQjfylk4_LQpSFeJR58TT6g0\">this interview of Roger Federer by Simon Kuper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed Yong wrote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2019\/07\/extinction-endling-care\/590617\/?fbclid=IwAR3uQVf-SFN14X8SOy9RW8HHZ9vMVrYLCFyNDeqe_6QkNjW_FG-lC8H1D4U\">a wonderful profile on the biologist David Sischo<\/a>. The article is about extinction of a species, in this case, a snail. He writes, \u201cWhen animals die out, the last survivor is called an endling.
