The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring safari destinations, ideal for both first-time visitors and seasoned safari travellers. Its remote location and strict conservation regulations limit guest numbers, creating a low-impact, highly exclusive safari experience. Here, the vast, water-filled landscapes feel wonderfully untouched.
The most popular time to visit the Okavango Delta is from late May to early October, when floodwaters from the Angolan highlands transform the delta into a lush wetland. However, don't overlook the shoulder and green seasons! These months offer their own charm, featuring emerald-green scenery, incredible birdwatching, and a more intimate, quiet atmosphere.
A spectacular way to experience the delta is from the air, in an open helicopter, while land activities include safari game drives to seek out the Big 5 and walking safaris. When you take a guided boat or traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) trip, you’ll navigate water channels where hippo, crocodile and elephants linger, and you drift quietly alongside prolific birdlife.
For a richer journey, combine the delta with Chobe National Park, home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations and a dramatic zebra migration, or add Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, Makgadikgadi Pans or Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls.
FAQ's
Why is the Okavango Delta more expensive than other safari destinations?
Safaris in the Delta are among Africa’s most exclusive and remote, often requiring charter flights and/or mokoro transfers to reach private lodges. Restricted guest numbers mean higher per-person costs to cover staff, maintenance, and operations.
Can you only visit the Okavango Delta during the flooding season?
No, the Delta is a year-round safari destination. From May to October, the annual flood creates waterways ideal for mokoro trips and boating, with excellent wildlife sightings as animals gather around the water. From November to April, the Delta is green and lush, with outstanding birdlife and fewer visitors. Water activities may be limited in some areas at this time.
