Uganda is a rich, green and wonderfully varied destination, often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa.” In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, you can trek through dense jungle to encounter endangered mountain gorillas, while Kibale Forest is renowned for its chimpanzee trekking.
Like Rwanda, Uganda draws those who want to experience an incredible, wild and close encounter with mountain gorillas. The main difference between a trek in these two countries is that the gorilla trekking permits are cheaper in Uganda and that the travel logistics are a bit more complicated. Trekking in Uganda also requires a moderate degree of hiking fitness.
Uganda’s landscapes are diverse and dramatic and in addition to primate encounters, you can visit the source of the Nile River, or enjoy classic game viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park (known for its tree-climbing lions). Uganda is also an exceptional birdwatching destination and home to around half of the bird species recorded on the African continent.
FAQ's
Is the gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda and Uganda different?
Gorilla trekking permits are cheaper in Uganda and the travel logistics are a bit more complicated. It takes about 8-9 hours by road to get from Entebbe International Airport to either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla Park.
Are Mountain Gorillas dangerous?
Mountain gorillas are generally peaceful, but like any wild animal, they can be dangerous if threatened. Your guide will carefully explain the dos and don’ts around the gorillas, which are habituated to humans and therefore are rather relaxed, typically resting and eating while you watch.
