Seeing mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s misty Virunga mountains is undoubtedly the country’s top attraction. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is one of those bucket-list, life-changing encounters that have to be experienced to be truly understood. Depending on their location, your trek to view them in their natural surroundings can be arduous, with steep climbs and dense vegetation, so a minimum level of fitness is required.
Beyond gorilla trekking, Rwanda offers chimpanzee tracking and exceptional birdlife in Nyungwe Forest, while Akagera National Park delivers a classic Big Five safari experience across lakes and savannah.
The country has a horrific backstory of genocide, but has become a beacon of hope in recent years. Kigali, the capital, is clean, creative and quietly cosmopolitan, with museums that tell Rwanda’s story of resilience and renewal.
For a different type of gorilla encounter, you can also trek to see western lowland gorillas in the Congo Basin, in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, in the peaceful Republic of Congo. Here, we recommend a 7-10 night rainforest immersion.
FAQ's
Can I see chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in Rwanda?
Yes, although you won’t see them on the same trek. To track chimpanzees, you’ll need to visit Nyungwe Forest (about five-hour drive from Volcanoes National Park).
Is the trek difficult?
It can be. The mountains in Volcanoes National Park are steep, and rain can make the ground damp, muddy and slippery. You’ll need to be relatively hiking fit (it’s good to do some hiking before your trip); however, the guides will assess your age and fitness level to put you in an appropriate group of similarly-abled trekkers.
